And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:17b-19 NIV)
Part of Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian church was that they might have the power to grasp the width, length, height, and depth of Christ’s love for us. A love that surpasses knowledge.
But, in order to be able to grasp the extent of Christ’s love for me, I need to first be rooted and established in love. If I do not first have a loving relationship with God, I will never be able to grasp the extent of his love.
And I need to have power. Not my own. But what the Holy Spirit brings to my life. Without his help, I will fail.
His love for me surpasses knowledge. It is not something that I can intellectually comprehend. But I can know it. In the same way, I do not fully understand why my wife loves me, but I do know her love. I experience it in many ways. Even so, while I cannot fully comprehend the love of Christ, I can experience it in my daily life.
Knowing His Love
I want to experience his love in my life. More and more each day. Finding rest and comfort sheltered in his loving embrace. Trusting that whatever happens to me, he cares and will see me through it. He will help me grow, through the good and the bad, into the person he wants me to be. I want to take hold of the hand he offers me and walk through this life in communion with him. To grasp the extent of Christ’s love for me, and to be filled with his fullness.
