When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
Genesis 5:21-24 NIV
The opening chapters of Genesis record two men who walked faithfully with God. Enoch, whom God took. And Noah (Gen. 6:9), whom God chose to build the ark and save humanity.
But what does it mean to walk faithfully with God? Is it so unusual that only a few exceptional people can do it? Or is it something that all believers can do? And should do?
I walk a lot. And sometimes I walk with my wife. When we walk together, we talk part of the time. And sometimes we are silent. But we are together, heading for the same destination and sharing the journey together. I don’t usually wander off and leave her to finish the walk alone. Instead, I faithfully walk hand in hand with her.
And that is what it means to walk faithfully with God. I am walking through this journey of life with him. We may talk some. And there may be times of silence. But regardless, we are together, with the same destination, a destination of his choosing. I do not wander off alone, doing my own thing, and hoping to catch up later.
It does not take an exceptional believer to walk faithfully with God. But the believer who does will do exceptional things. Because they are not doing it alone.
