I feel torn between the two, because I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far, but it is more vital for your sake that I remain in the body.
Philippians 1:23-24 NET
When Paul wrote this, he was in a Roman prison. And he expressed to the Philippian church his desire to depart this life and be with Christ. Something that was, in Paul’s mind, better by far than anything in this life.
But he also recognized that staying in this life would be better for the Philippians and others he could minister to. So, which was best? To go or to stay? Leaving was best for him. But staying was best for others.
The choice to go or stay was ultimately God’s. He would leave in God’s time. But while he stayed, he would do his best to help others.
Are you looking forward to the time when you leave this life behind, departing to be with Christ? Fully convinced that physical death is only a transition into something much better. Or is it something you would like to put off for as long as possible? Hoping that what lies beyond the grave is better than what you have now, but not too anxious to find out?
The time of our departure from this life is unknown to most of us. But what do we do with the time we have left? Is the world a better place because we are in it? Especially, is the church well served by my life here? Am I taking advantage of the time I have here to help the kingdom to advance in the world? Or am I primarily concerned with my own interests?
Eagerly await that time when you depart this life and go to be with Christ. But, while he leaves you here, do your best to serve our Lord and make a difference in the lives of those you come into contact with.
