Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people, because you know that you will receive your inheritance from the Lord as the reward. Serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24 NET
While this was directed toward slaves, it has practical application to all of us. Whatever we do, do it with enthusiasm. This can also be translated as “with all your heart.”
Whatever you are doing. This includes the workplace, at home, and recreational activities. Don’t do anything half-heartedly. Adopt the attitude that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. If you are going to do something, give it your best rather than just going through the motions.
And this is especially true as we serve our Lord. Serve the Lord with enthusiasm. The one who created, redeemed, and adopted us into his family is worth giving our best to. Love him with all you are, both in your personal life and within a local community of believers.
Imagine what our local church would be like if each of us took this to heart. If our fellowship, worship, study, prayer, and service were conducted with enthusiasm. And not with a fake enthusiasm, like a mask we put on for a couple of hours. But giving ourselves fully to the work of the Lord within his church.
That would seem to describe the church in the early chapters of Acts. And that enthusiasm attracted significant numbers of people who gave themselves to the Lord and joined with the believers.
What if, when visitors joined us Sunday morning, rather than a business-as-usual atmosphere, there was excitement in our services as we fellowshipped and worshiped? That is what drew me to the Lord. Why would it not draw others as well?
