And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

Colossians 3:15 (ESV)

Peace can be elusive. When you read or watch the news, you see that peace is missing in much of the world. Conflicts between nations and people groups are common. Individuals are often at odds with one another. There is conflict in the political arena, at work, and even in families. Is peace possible?

Yes, peace is possible. In John 14:27, Jesus told his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” As believers, we can experience the peace that Jesus gives us. Not just a lack of conflict with others. But life in harmony with other believers and with God.

Paul tells us to let that peace rule in our hearts. This has both individual and corporate aspects. As a believer, I should seek to live in harmony with the Holy Spirit within me, allowing him to do his good work in me.

Collectively together, as the body of Christ, we are also to allow the peace of God to rule. We should seek to live in harmony with one another, loving, serving, and growing together in Christ.

We will often find ourselves at odds with an unbelieving world or facing challenging circumstances. When you do, you still can let Christ’s peace rule in your heart.

And the peace of the body may be disrupted by those pursuing selfish aims and advocating false doctrines. Resolve those issues quickly, and let Christ’s peace rule. Never be content with disharmony within the body.

We do not have to agree with every believer. But we should always strive for peace.
