The head of Ephraim is Samaria,

and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand firm in your faith,
you will not stand at all.’”
The kingdom of Judah was facing a crisis. Their sister kingdom to the north, Israel, had allied with a second kingdom, and they were marching to attack Judah. Ahaz, the king of Judah, was tempted to ally with Assyria in the hopes that Assyria would protect them. But God sent Isaiah to Ahaz to encourage him to trust in God rather than Assyria. However, Ahaz ignored the words of Isaiah, and it was costly for the nation.
Standing Firm
God’s message to Ahaz about the importance of standing firm in our faith is just as relevant to us as it was to Ahaz. I am not the king of a small nation facing powerful enemies seeking to destroy me. But I do face the challenges and uncertainties that are common to humanity. And this verse challenges me to stand firm in my faith. To trust in God’s provision for me rather than looking elsewhere.
It is tempting to look to our possessions, our government, or other sources for security. And they can provide some level of short-term protection. But if our faith is in those things, we stand on shaky ground because, in the end, they will fail us. Only if our faith is in God will we be able to stand firm through all the storms of life, emerging victorious in the end.
