Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
This passage, in some ways, parallels Jesus’ question to His disciples in Mark 8:27-30. In that passage, Jesus asked His disciples who the people thought He was. And then who they thought He was. When they answered that they believed Him to be the Messiah, He warned them not to tell anyone.
In this passage, the Jewish high priest asked Jesus whether He was the Messiah. And now, for the first time publicly, Jesus declared that He was. But He did not stop with a simple affirmation that He was the Messiah. He went beyond that and applied a pair of messianic prophecies from Psalm 110:1 and Daniel 7:13 to Himself. But He did not just quote these references. He told the high priest that he would see Jesus fulfilling these prophecies. He might not believe it then, but there was coming a time when he would. However, it would be too late then.
Many people today are in the place of this Jewish high priest. They might mock and condemn Jesus and anyone who follows Him. They might ignore Jesus and His claims. Or they might even give lip service to Him as Messiah, but fail to leave this world behind and follow Him. But there is coming a time when every knee will bow before Him and acknowledge Him as Lord (Phil. 2:9-11). But it will be too late then to change your eternal destiny (Heb. 9:27). How much better to know and follow Him as Lord now.
