Because You Say So

Luke 5:5

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

Luke 5:4-7 NIV

Simon was a professional fisherman who knew how to catch fish in the Sea of Galilee. It wasn’t for lack of knowledge or effort that he and his companions failed to catch any fish that night. They had tried hard, but the fish just weren’t there.

Jesus’ instruction to try again made no sense; there were no fish. But Simon chose to follow Jesus’ instruction, just because he said so. And the results astonished the fishermen. They caught so many fish that their boats began to sink.

What if, after a long and fruitless season of service, Jesus were to say to us, “Put your boat back out into the water and try one more time.” Would we do it? Even though it might seem like a waste of time? And even though we were tired because of our fruitless efforts? Or would we decline, sure that it would be a waste of time and effort?

If will respond in obedience–“Because you say so”–and push back out, trusting that he knows best, we may discover that we need more boats to bring in the haul of fish he provides.

  1. The trust Simon had stem out of Jesus teaching. After he heard a lot from Him. He developed Faith. So this instruction coming to a person who is already everwhelmed by Faith. So, for us Faith should be a number one target for all other virtues (prayer, healing etc) will work if we have Faith in Jesus.

    • Without a doubt, faith is an essential element in our walk with the Lord. But when this occurred, Simon had very little experience with Jesus. Yet he still demonstrated faith.
