Jesus had cast a demon out of a man who was mute, allowing him to speak. The crowd was amazed, but some accused him of driving out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons. Jesus was responding to this charge when a woman in the crowd cried out that his mother was blessed to have Jesus as her son.
As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
Luke 11:27-28 NIV
He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
There are many today who will copy this woman. We see people as blessed because of their prosperity, health, family, and many other things. And we often are blessed with those things. But, in responding to this woman, Jesus pointed out where real blessings lie.
Better than blessings based on external circumstances is the blessedness of those who hear or read the word of God and obey it. Those who hear the gospel of salvation and respond in faith are blessed with new life in Christ. Believers who invest time in the word of God and seek to make it a part of their lives are blessed with a growing relationship with our Lord and Savior. Don’t be satisfied with the fleeting blessings that come from external circumstances. Instead, find real and eternal blessedness that comes from reading and obeying God’s word.
