Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
Colossians 4:5 NIV
This verse contains two instructions. But these two instructions are dealing with the same thing. As a believer in the Lord Jesus, I will come into frequent contact with those who are not believers, those whom Paul calls outsiders. And his instruction concerns these interactions I have with unbelievers.
These outsiders are outside God’s kingdom, lost, and facing eternal destruction. But they are not without hope. It may be that my interaction with them will make a difference in their lives. While I may not directly lead them to the Lord, it may be that my dealings with them will move them in that direction. I can never know the impact I make on everyone I encounter. So, I should always be careful to make it a positive experience. One that will contribute to a saving encounter with our Lord.
Be wise in your encounters with unbelievers. Recognize that many people will judge God, and Christianity, based on what they see in you. Be sure that your words and actions will always positively influence others, especially those who are lost.
And make the most of every opportunity. Not every encounter with an unbeliever will lend itself to sharing the gospel with them. But, when it does, take advantage of the opportunity. As Peter says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to the give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Pet. 3:15).
