My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

James 1:19-20 NIV

James’ letter is filled with practical instructions for living as believers. And this is one of his better-known bits of advice. Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Unfortunately, James’ advice is often ignored today, with negative consequences. And this is sadly true within the community of believers as well.

Be quick to listen. We should put forth the effort to really hear what is being expressed. Words are essential for good communication. And we should listen carefully to what is said. But sometimes, the words are inadequate and may not clearly express the speaker’s intent. As you listen, try to understand what the person is trying to communicate.

Be slow to speak. It is all too easy to respond to another person before we have heard what they are trying to tell us. Too often, we listen to a few words and incorrectly assume that we know what they are saying. And we respond to what we think they are saying rather than what they are actually trying to say. Before answering, listen carefully, being sure you have heard them fully.

And be slow to anger. It is easy to get angry when someone says or does something that hurts us. And the instruction to be quick to listen is appropriate here. Make sure your anger is not based on a misunderstanding. But even when anger might be justified, it is good to heed James’ warning that our anger does not produce the righteous life God desires. Rather than being angry, we should respond with love and forgiveness, especially within the body of believers (Col. 3:12-14). While that response is contrary to our human nature, it is appropriate for God’s people. And it will serve to build up the body rather than cause it harm.
