“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
John 17:24 NIV
The Bible often speaks of God’s love for us. He loves us so much that God the Son took on humanity, lived among us for a while, and died as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. And when we think of God’s love, this is likely the first thing that comes to mind.
But another aspect of his love is expressed in this verse, even though that word is not used here. Jesus, knowing his task on earth was nearly finished and that he would be returning to the Father, prayed for his disciples. And he spoke of his desire that they would be with him when he returned to the Father.
Jesus had spent three years with these men who were with him at the end. And, despite their failings, he loved them. Enough to die for them. And enough that he wanted to hang out with them for eternity, sharing his glory with them. This is a very personal and intimate love. A love that delights in being with the one who is loved.
Jesus’ prayer was not just for the eleven with him in the room. He also was praying for those who would believe in him through their message. And that includes those who have put their faith and trust in him today.
Jesus gave his life to rescue me from a fate I richly deserved. But it was more than deliverance. He did what he did so I could be with him in his glory. Jesus wants me to be with him.
