You must have this tassel so that you may look at it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and obey them and so that you do not follow after your own heart and your own eyes that lead you to unfaithfulness.
Numbers 15:39 NET
When I am driving, I see numerous signs along the road. Many of these signs remind me of the rules I need to follow as I drive. One of the more common signs is white, rectangular, with a large number on them. These speed limit signs inform and remind me how fast I can safely drive along that stretch of road.
Reminders are important. They help to ensure that I am doing what I should be. And in no part of my life is that more important than remembering God and his directions for living a godly and holy life.
In Numbers 15:37-41, God instructed the Israelites to put tassels on the corner of their clothing. This was not just a fashion statement. Instead, it was to serve as a memory prompt. When they saw these tassels, they were to remember the commands God had given them. And, in remembering, to also obey–to follow God rather than their own desires.
The function these tassels were to serve is important, even if we no longer wear tassels or other visible reminders. It is important that we remember God’s instructions. Not just on Sunday mornings. But as an integral part of our daily lives, guiding our thoughts, words, and actions.
Make spending time in God’s word a daily priority. And make it more than just a routine part of going to bed at night, like brushing your teeth. Take the time to listen to what God has to say to you through it. Meditate on it. And then put His instruction into practice.
As traffic signs inform and remind us of how to drive safely along the roads we travel, the Bible will inform and remind us of God’s instructions. Instructions that, if followed, will guide us in living holy and godly lives.
