Today I invoke heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set life and death, blessing and curse, before you. Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live!

Deuteronomy 30:19 NET

Israel was poised to enter the promised land. Before they did, Moses delivered his final address to them. And he warned them of the consequences of failing to obey God. The blessings for obedience had been clearly spelled out. And the curses for disobedience had been laid out as well.

So, how would they respond? If you are familiar with Israel’s story, you know that they mainly chose the route of disobedience. And it cost them dearly.

However, the words Moses shared with Israel were not just for them. Our circumstances are different than theirs. But the choice is the same. Will we submit to God’s rule and live in obedience to him? Or will we go our own way?

When we go our own way, the end is death, eternal separation from God. What might seem profitable in this life will turn into loss when this life is over.

However, the result is quite different when we choose the life God offers us. Life may be hard now. But we do not travel this road alone. And, at the end of it, eternity with our Lord awaits—an eternity beyond compare.

So, as Moses said, the choice is yours: will you choose life or death?
