Jesus, a Greater Prophet than Moses

Deuteronomy 34:10-12

No prophet ever again arose in Israel like Moses, who knew the LORD face to face. He did all the signs and wonders the LORD had sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, all his servants, and the whole land, and he displayed great power and awesome might in view of all Israel.

Deuteronomy 34:10-12 NET

This eulogy for Moses at the end of Deuteronomy is also very descriptive of Jesus, although there is a significant difference. Moses, as great a prophet as he was, was just a man. Jesus was also a man. But much more than a man. He was also God, the second person of the triune God.

However, the similarities between Moses and Jesus are striking.

•⠀Both performed great signs and miracles, displaying the power of God to the world.
•⠀They both were prophets, delivering a message from God to the people. Moses delivered the law, while Jesus’ message was of grace and truth (John 1:17).
•⠀They both served as priests, offering sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. While Moses offered animals, Jesus offered himself as a spotless lamb.
•⠀They both established kingdoms. For Moses, it was the kingdom of Israel, while Jesus established the kingdom of heaven.
•⠀Both served as intermediaries in establishing covenants between God and the people. For Moses, the terms of the covenant were written on stone and sealed with the blood of an animal. The terms of the covenant Jesus established are written on the hearts of his people and sealed with his own blood.
•⠀Moses saw God face to face. Jesus was the face of God.

But there was a second significant difference between them. Moses disobeyed God and failed to enter the Promised Land. Jesus was faithful, even to the cross, and became more than a great prophet. He became our redeemer and savior.

In Jesus, a prophet greater than Moses has come. Praise God.
