Who can fathom the Spirit of the LORD,
Isaiah 40:13-14 NIV
or instruct the LORD as his counselor?
Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him,
and who taught him the right way?
Who was it that taught him knowledge,
or showed him the path of understanding?
Do you ever question why God does, or allows, some things? If so, you are in good company. I suspect that most people, even the most fervent followers of Jesus, have questions. We sometimes have a hard time making sense of the world around us. Why is there so much suffering? And, more personally, why do I and my loved ones suffer so much pain and grief?
God does invite us to come to him and share what is on our hearts. And he does listen to us and respond to us when we pray. But there is nothing I tell him that he does not already know. There is no advice I can give God to help him make better decisions. He knows all things. Even my deepest thoughts and attitudes. And he knows what is best for me, even if sometimes it is at odds with what I think is best.
So I can, and should, trust him with my life. Knowing that nothing will catch him by surprise. And that he wants what is best for me. Even using today’s trying times to accomplish it. He is the master potter, and I am a lump of clay. And he is producing a masterpiece from this lump of clay, according to a design that only he knows.
