For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV

The cross was the instrument of Jesus’ death. And it has come to represent, not just his death, but his redeeming work for humanity. The ‘message of the cross’ and the gospel are synonymous in the work of Christ. The cross is good news for all of humanity.

The Power of God

For those who have believed and are being saved, the cross is the power of God. It is a power that redeems broken and fallen people. And it is a power that brings me into the presence of God, transforming my life, and preparing me for service now and in the life to come. The cross is the means by which God’s power is unleashed within the life of the believer.

But the cross is something else for those who are perishing, who have refused to believe. For them, the cross is nothing but foolishness, an object of ridicule and scorn. To them, the cross is an object of weakness, of defeat. And so, they want no part in it. But in doing so, they reject the real power and victory that comes through the cross alone.

Cling to the cross of Christ. Allow its transforming power to flow through you.
